Subject: Mystery
I have just set up DV 2.25 with QEMM on a 386, 2 megs memory, to be able to
run a BBS and also do other things without throwing users off the board. It
works fine but with one problem which hangs it irretrievably. The first
partition has bags of memory (150K more than my program needs), and a script
loads a batch file invoking Binkley. Mail comes and goes fine. When a
human caller is online, it exits to Phoenix. The BBS loads, and if the
caller says he doesn't want ANSI screens, everything works fine. If the
user DOES choose ANSI, halfway through the first welcome screen the system
hangs.
I am running a Hercules clone card. No TSR's, no drivers except X00.SYS. It
does this with ANSI.SYS loaded in config.sys; it does it without ANSI.SYS
but with DVANSI.SYS loaded in the BBS partition. I have a config choice in
Phoenix to start up in full-screen (ANSI) mode at the console, or non-ANSI
with a caller info window; this doesn't matter either. The BBS is set not to
swap. It doesn't matter whether I have Phoenix do BIOS or full-screen
writes. There is something in the display of a large ANSI file (full-screen
color logo) which drives it nuts, disables the keyboard, and forces a hard
reboot. I get no error messages, just a hangup from an angry caller and
half a welcome screen frozen at the console. Any suggestions?

if this is a 386 and you are running QEMM then put NR on the QEMM.SYS line
like this --> Device=qemm.sys NR

Subject: Latest Trend
Has anyone else noticed the latest trend in entertainment software ???? Well
if you haven't let me fill you in......It doesn't work with Desqview, at least
not with the Quarterdeck Expanded Memory Manager (QEMM). Not only do you have
to exit Desqview as was typical with some of the past entertainment software
but you have to reboot your system without the expanded memory manager. All of
the software that I've tried from Access Software is incompatible as is the
case with the two (2) latest titles from Microprose F-15 Strike Eagle II, and
Sword of the Samurai. I contacted Access and have not received a reply,
Microprose contacted me and told me that they were aware of the problem and
would contact me when they find a solution......"I'm not holding by breath
folks..."

I use ZCOMM and DV all of the time. I have ZCOMM setup to "not swap"
which is very important. In this mode I have run concurrent downloads
with simultaneous sessions of WordPerfect 5.0 and Word 5.0( just to see
if I could do it). The session worked just fine as long as ZCOMM is
set to run in the background mode not swapped. I am using QEMM 386
version 4.23 and DV 2.22(? on last digit) installed in a Northgate 386,
running DOS 4.01 (by choice) with 4Mb of memory. The single partitions
on 2 x 65Mb was the reason for 4.01. I had problems initially where
the Adaptec 2372b controller bios interferred with extended memory
programs. Disabling the bios and replacing the key-board controller,
which was also defective and interferred with QEMM, produced a system
that runs very well now... I use ZCOMM because it appears to be DV
aware and if you follow Forsberg's instruction, runs very very well.
I had problems with Qmodem and Ymodem download and switched to ZCOMM
because of it. ZCOMM will also autodetect Kermit, Quick B+, and
Zmodem download requests and you don't have to switch out of terminal
mode.

What does NR do? Not documented in my copy of QEMM!

Short for No ROM. Is supposed to exclude all ROM areas from QEMM
control. This switch created lock up problems on my system.
